Though 2018 marks our physical launch, RUST & Co. has been a part of our lives and lived in our hearts for more than a decade. We have spent countless hours dreaming of our small family run business…imagining the many trips to markets in search of the perfect items to fill our shop and dwelling on the smallest details of the store to create a beautiful space that is both inspiring and comfortable at the same time. We have imagined a place where we work alongside our family and where our customers are our friends.
I grew up a small-town girl from South Dakota where life was simple and safe, everyone knew everyone, nobody ever locked their doors, and summers as a kid were spent on your bike riding all over town from sun up to sun down. The sound of the town whistle blowing in the evenings was your only que to go back home.

I grew up on the East Coast just outside of New York City, an urban kid living in a high-rise. We had a strong sense of community and our neighbors were our family. Summers were spent on the Jersey Shore, playing on the side-walks and running down the streets at the sound of the ice cream truck.

Though our lives began worlds apart, fate and a love brought us together. I dreamed of moving to the “city” and Tom dreamed of possibility. We both found that in Minneapolis where we met at Target Corporation. As we explored our love for retail in those early years, we found a forever love with each other. This love and our corporate retail careers took us to San Francisco. While our corporate careers moved forward, the yearning to create something of our own never faded. It took time, but eventually the calling was too great to ignore and we began our journey to bring RUST & Co. to life. For us, we couldn’t see doing that in any other place than Sioux Falls.
THE NAME…Years ago (when we were just dating), as we dreamed of our business, we wondered what we would call it. We wanted it to be something that was easy to remember, but that held a significance to us. Tom had the idea to use our initials (SR and TU) in a creative way … which is how the name RUST came to be. After our two daughters were born we added the Co., because of course they are a big part of this beautiful dream. And as such… RUST & Co. was born.
As with our company name, we have blended elements of ourselves, our heritages, and our personal styles to build a brand with a fresh take on fashion and a new twist to the retail experience…
We carry a curated assortment of modern yet timeless clothing and accessories for men and women. We shop the country in search of pieces and brands that embody quality, versatility, comfort and fashion. We welcome trends but we do not chase fads. It is the Mix at RUST that sets us apart…where weathered meets polished, tom-boy meets sexy, vintage meets modern. Simply stated, RUST is “Midwest sensibility meets East Coast style”.
